2016 Comber Fair Honours
Paul and Doreen Reaume
Once again, the Comber Agricultural Society would like to recognize the many contributions made to our community by Paul and Doreen Reaume and their family.
Paul Francis Reaume was born in 1929 to Achille and Irene Reaume – one of four children. He was raised on the very farm where his family’s home is today. Doreen Agnes Bissonnette was born in 1931 to parents Theophile and Virginia Bissonnette over on the Rochester Townline. She was also one of four children. In 1954, Paul married his sweetheart, Doreen, whom he met at his brother Walt’s house where Doreen occasionally babysat Walt’s children. At the age of 18, Paul opened a hardware store in Comber called AJ Reaume and Son. He found it difficult to just “sit and wait” for customers so he constantly added new things to the store from glass cutting to sheet metal work and furnace repairs … and of course, plumbing. He went back to school when he was 29 and became a Funeral Director. Even as a young man, Paul always helped the local undertaker recover the deceased and transport them to the funeral home.
Paul and Doreen have five children – Cecil (and Pam), Yvonne (and Ken Labonte), Ron (and Janice), Randy (and Diane), and Greg (and Adina). And from those five children, they have 23 grandchildren! Throughout the years, while Doreen was home with the children, Paul always chipped in to set up the fairgrounds before the fair. He was responsible for opening the waterlines and making sure the bathrooms and kitchen were operating. For many years, he also looked after the ball booth – keeping it running and the building painted. As soon as they were “old enough”, Paul took his sons with him to help out at fair time and so helping out became natural to these boys. To this day, Paul and Doreen’s sons and their grandchildren are instrumental in the set up and tear down of the fair every year. This involves several days before, during, and after the fair.
The Comber Fair was the highlight of the summer at the Reaume household. Doreen spoke fondly of helping to decorate the kid’s bikes, entering their crafts and teaching Yvonne to bake at a very early age… especially the year Yvonne’s brother bumped her arm and her cake never made it to the fair!
In our community, Doreen is a long standing member of the Catholic Women’s League and for many years, the secretary of the Comber Chapter IODE. Paul has belonged to the Church’s Ushers Club and is a proud member of the Comber Legion, Branch 241.
We have touched on the many things this busy family has contributed to our community and especially, our fair. The Comber Agricultural Society thanks Paul, Doreen and Family, for ongoing support. We look forward to many more successful years of working together on this wonderful event.
